A New Era For England?
The same question that gets asked every single time a new manager is proudly appointed the boss of the England National Team - Is this the start of a new and successful era? The game against Spain is quickly approaching and that could be the all-crucial game for interim boss Gareth Southgate. If England get a good result, anything but a loss basically, he may well be appointed. He has impressed many during his short spell in charge, excluding the bore draw against Slovenia, and has found a way to win games without playing that well, for example the 3-0 win against Scotland on Friday night. A draw against Spain and he could be in with a shout but a win and most doubters will struggle for words. Of course, there are the usual 'other candidates' such as Eddie Howe, Arsene Wenger, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Bruce, Jurgen Klinsmann and so on but no ones name really sticks out on that list. In my opinion Southgate is the leading candidate other than Eddie Howe, who has singled himself out of the race for job.
So say Southgate does get the job, will it be typical England - do well in qualifying but then get to the big stage and completely let everyone down whether they had high hopes or no hopes at all or will this really be the manager that takes everyone by surprise and take the England national team to the next level of international football? Anyone who has been alive long enough will have no hopes whoever the manager is that comes in but could this be the surprise manager that went from England u21s to an England legend and recreate moments such as the world cup winning team of 66.
Most people that are wise will say no but eventually some manager actually has to do well. Is Gareth Southgate that man? Let us know in the comment!
